Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

Is your child due for a dental visit soon? Don’t forget to claim your $1000 CDBS entitlement.

Monterey Keys Dental Surgery provides the basic dental services (outlined under CDBS’ list of accessible treatments) to claim your benefits with ease.

If you have received the confirmation letter informing you that your child is entitled for the CDBS entitlement of $1000 in dental benefits, all you need to do is bring your child down for an appointment and we’ll process the claim for you.

Simply book an appointment and present the letter, along with your Medicare card, to our friendly staff at the front desk. We will process your payment using your Medicard to make the necessary deductions. The system will reflect your new balance amount, which may be used for future visits.

No hassle. No paperwork. No out-of-pocket expenses. It’s all good.

What is CDBS?

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) initiative was launched on 1 January 2014. The initiative grants eligible children aged between 2-17 access to free basic dental services, within a capped benefit amount of $1000 per child over a two calendar year period. If the full amount of the benefits is not used within the first year of eligibility, whatever remainder amount can still be used if deduction is made – before the end of the second year – within the entitlement period.

What treatments are covered under the CDBS initiative?

Access to the $1000 CDBS funds are granted for the following dental treatments and procedures:

  • Oral examination
  • X-ray
  • Dental cleaning (oral prophylaxis)
  • Extraction
  • Root canal
  • Fissure sealing

Treatments and procedures considered non-essential by the initiative will not be covered. They include advanced treatments that fall under the Orthodontics and Cosmetic Dentistry categories like teeth alignment correction (braces), teeth whitening, crowns and bridges, dental veneers, etc. Further, dental services provided by hospitals or within an oral surgery environment will not be covered by the CDBS.

Is my child eligible for CDBS funds?

If your child is eligible for the funds, you would have received a letter from the Commonwealth Department of Human Services to confirm eligibility by early 2014. As this is an ongoing means-tested benefits programme, your child’s eligibility will be assessed at the beginning of each calendar year.

In addition to Medicare eligibility, your child or teenager must for at least one day in the calendar year, be aged between 2-17 and receive Family Tax Benefit A or other Australian Government payments, including: Parenting Payment; Carer Payment; ABSTUDY; Youth Allowance; Disability Support Pension; Special Benefit; Youth Allowance; Disability Support Pension; Double Orphan Pension; Veteran’s Children Education Scheme (if the child is 16 or over); and Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Education and Training Scheme (if the child is 16 or over).

Can I check my eligibility and funds balance?

To check your child’s eligibility or balance amount, simply call the Medicare inquiry hotline at 132 011 or access your Medicare online account at

Will I have to bear any out-of pocket costs?

If your child has sufficient CDBS funds to cover the dental fees, you would have no out-of-pocket costs to bear. At Monterey Keys Dental Surgery, we will process your claim to be bulk-billed via Medicare.

You won’t have to submit a Medicare claim or be required to make any form of co-payment. We guarantee a hassle-free CDBS claim for all our young patients.

How does the two-year period work?

Your child will have access to the capped benefit funds of $1000 over a two-year period. The two-year period starts at the beginning of the calendar month and not from the first appointment date.

Will my child who turns 2 or 18 during the year still be eligible?

Yes, for as long as he/she is aged between 2 -17 for a minimum of 1 day during the year.

Can I utilise my private health insurance with the CDBS benefits?

No. You cannot use your private health insurance and the CDBS benefits to pay for the same treatment.

Will I be able to access the funds if I have lost the eligibility letter?

Yes. All you need to do is present your Medicare card at your reception desk and we’ll be able to access your account and make deductions accordingly.

You will receive a print out of your available balance after the deduction or you can check your balance during subsequent visits, as your account information will be accessible using your Medicare card.
