What our General Dentists can do for you

There are many reasons why you would need to see a general dentist. Although the role and scope of responsibilities of a general dentist has expanded in recent times, what hasn’t changed is the primary goal of providing optimum dental care using safe and proven treatment methods.

Dental caries

A general dentist is trained to handle most of your dental problems. In fact, many of your dental problems are caused by the development of dental caries – which can be described as the general practitioner’s number one enemy.

Dental caries, better known by street names “tooth decay” and “cavities”, is a bacterial infection that destroys your teeth. It is estimated that this common chronic childhood disease has devastating effects on 20% of children while prevalent in approximately 30% - 50% of adults over 50 years of age.

From preventative measures through drilling and filling to restorative forms of dentistry, a general dentist battles dental caries at every stage of the bacterial development. We always recommend the most minimally invasive treatments, although much depends on the extent of your tooth damage. Treatments range from simple fillings to more extensive procedures like root canals.

As far as is possible, our job is to save your natural tooth and preserve its functional and aesthetic qualities.

Gum disease

When a sticky film of bacteria, known as plaque, starts to infect your gums, it can lead to serious consequences. Periodontal (gum) disease refers to the infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. If left unchecked, this progressive disease can cause irreparable harm to your teeth and gums. Scientific evidence even suggests a link between gum disease and a host of health problems including diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

Although regular brushing and flossing can greatly reduce the incidence of periodontal issues, the best preventative measure is to visit a general dentist regularly for professional cleaning and oral exams. Like diabetes, once a person develops gum disease, he will have it for life. The sooner the symptomless disease is caught, the better the outcome.

The type of treatment we recommend depends on how severe your tooth and gum erosion is. We provide full diagnosis and assessment to determine your condition while keeping your overall dental health in check. If the disease is spotted early, our treatment involves oral hygiene and clinical plaque removal. Other treatments depend on how advanced the specific case is.

A fine balance

Many factors give rise to dental problems, including diet, oral hygiene, plaque build-up, lifestyle choices and genetic make-up etc. When dealing with these factors on an individual basis, a good general dentist knows when to be proactive and when to be reactive

An overly proactive dentist may recommend unnecessary treatments and measures, far removed from the patient’s actual condition or concerns. On the other hand, a dentist may react only when a problem grows “big enough” – although he could have prevented it in the first place.

At Monterey Keys Dental Surgery, we believe in achieving a healthy balance between prevention and restoration. It may take a little more time and effort, but experience tells us that the more we get to know our patients, the better position we’re in to provide the appropriate treatment and care.

By carefully reviewing the patients’ dental/medical histories, assessing oral patterns and evaluating specific conditions, we are able to determine suitable courses of action that consistently derives the most successful outcomes.

Stress-free dentistry

Do you dread going to a dental clinic? Do you avoid seeing a dentist because every dental trip ends up being a stressful experience?

No matter how irrational it may seem to others, dental phobia is real and can have a profound impact on your dental health. If you avoid seeing a dentist even though you require treatment, you’re actually allowing your dental problem to worsen. Consequently, you may end up with an irreversible condition or require a more involved type of treatment – like oral surgery – when the problem gets bigger.

Most forms of dental phobia originate from negative childhood memories. Unless remedial steps are taken, dental phobia doesn’t just go away.

At Monterey Keys Dental Surgery on the Gold Coast, we empathise with the emotional stress of an anxious patient. That is why we make extra effort to create a serene environment that our patients would feel calm and relaxed in. Our dentists, experienced in the use of sedation dentistry, know how to treat nervous patients and make them feel at ease throughout the procedures. If you are fearful of dental needles or need help to cope with stress during treatment, we are able to help.
