Oral Hygiene

We believe the best form of dentistry is no dentistry!

Preventative dentistry is the key to retaining your natural teeth for life. Through a comprehensive oral hygiene routine encompassing at home care and regular visits to our dental surgery on the Gold Coast, you can achieve optimal oral health and avoid lengthy restorative treatment in the future.

Your daily oral hygiene routine should include:

  • Brushing your teeth morning and night - this should be done for at least three minutes at a time, ensuring that you brush along the gum line. Position your brush at a 45 degree angle and brush every tooth surface in a circular motion.
  • Flossing your teeth every single day - this should be done to remove plaque from the surfaces of your teeth that cannot be accessed by brushing. Ensure you use a fresh length of floss for each tooth.

You should also visit our dental practice every six months.

During these visits we will professionally clean your teeth to remove the build-up of calculus (hardened plaque) that cannot be removed by brushing alone. We will also use these visits to our Gold Coast surgery to check for signs of poor oral health and disease such as:

  • Oral Cancer- Early detection is paramount to successfully beating oral cancer, with a 70% survival rate for those who are diagnosed with oral cancer in its early stages, compared to a 30% survival rate if the cancer has spread.
  • Periodontal Disease-We can diagnose and treat gum disease in its early stages to prevent it from progressing to advanced gingivitis or periodontitis.
  • Tooth Decay- Early detection of tooth decay can help prevent a lengthy and expensive restoration process.

By maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine, you can actively encourage optimal oral and overall health!

Benefits of bi-annual dental checks

When you have a healthy and strong set of teeth and gums, it is vital to the quality of life and your physical health as a whole. After all, our teeth are used for biting and chewing, functions that are essential to our intake and enjoyment of food – which is important whether you eat to live or live to eat. That is why no matter how busy we get with work, school and everyday responsibilities, we must never neglect looking after our oral health. Apart from maintaining regular home oral hygiene practice, you must not overlook the other main pillar of good oral health: Visiting the dentist at least two times a year.

It is not enough to upkeep a regular brushing/flossing regime even though it is vitally important to your oral health. Periodic dental check-ups are necessary in ensuring that a dentist is monitoring the progress of the various parts of your oral cavity through carefully administered oral examinations.

Dentistry is not just about fixing tooth decay. In fact, the crux of preventative dentistry is to detect the early symptoms of cavities and gum disease so as to prevent their development. It doesn’t take long for plaque and tartar to accumulate in the mouth. This is particularly true for children’s teeth that are still in the growing phases and even adults who consume a lot of sugary or starchy foods that unwittingly create the conditions for bacterial build-up on their teeth and gums.

One of the most important roles of a dental check-up is to prevent plaque and tartar build-up. If plaque and tartar are not swiftly dealt with in their early stages of development, they can adversely harm your gum tissues. If left untreated, they can develop into serious gum disease, causing much pain and agony. The harm may become irreversible if the gum disease turns into a chronic condition.

A thorough examination involves investigating various parts of your oral cavity including teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks and soft tissue regions in the mouth. Beyond the oral cavity, the dentist would check the areas around the head and neck for any signs of abnormalities or deficiencies. You will also be examined for any warning signs that may suggest medical conditions like diabetes or oral cancer – the latter is critical for high-risk patients such as chain smokers. Depending on your dental/ medical records and family’s medical history, the dentist may even check your jaw movements, facial structure and saliva conditions to determine whether there are risk factors to consider or prevent.

The purpose of regular dental checks therefore is to spot any early warning signs and mitigate with appropriate courses of action before they develop into serious dental/medical conditions that warrant expensive and complex treatment options later on.
