Treatment Categories Explained

All of our treatments can be divided into four main categories: namely General Dentistry, Cosmetic Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry and Preventative Dentistry.

Although these categories have specific goals that are unique in focus and orientation, you would find that some treatments share overlapping traits with those present in other categories. For example, modern crowns and bridges have many known aesthetic attributes that suggest affiliation to the branch of Cosmetic Dentistry. However, they are also highly prized for their restorative benefits, and thus have been classified according to their conventional strengths.

Nevertheless, it is beneficial to understand the various treatments we offer under each of the unique banners. To help give you a clearer picture, we have outlined here the main purpose and goals of each broad category of treatments.

General Dentistry

This is the section that covers the basic oral health care services that can be performed at the dentist’s office. Many types of treatments fall under the umbrella of general dentistry, including tooth extractions, professional (prophylactic) cleaning, filling of tooth cavities, etc. Our range of general dental treatments is suitable for patients of all age groups.

Our primary scope of duties involves the diagnosis and treatment of dental caries (tooth decay) as well as periodontal (gum) diseases. The tooth decay is a very prevalent dental condition that afflicts most people – with serious implications for a sizeable population. General dentists play a significant role in preventing the spread of this bacterial infection.

Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease is the other dental nemesis that general dentists are pit against. Going for regular checks and cleans can significantly reduce the incidence of this disease, which can destroy the tissues surrounding and supporting your teeth. If left unchecked, it can lead to a severe tooth loss condition.

Additionally, we offer less common but equally important treatments such as root canal therapy and wisdom teeth extractions. We also provide sedation dentistry to help our anxious patients better cope with extensive treatments.

Cosmetic Dentistry

This is a special area of expertise that specifically relates to the appearance of teeth and gums. Although our focus is on the way your smile looks, cosmetic dentistry should not be dismissed as superficial or less important to your oral care needs. After all, the patient’s level of satisfaction with our services is intrinsically entwined with the treatment outcomes based on both the health as well as beauty of the final dental work.

Besides undergoing additional training in various advanced treatment modalities, cosmetic dentists enhance their clinical knowledge by honing their artistic flair in the area of smile aesthetics. Our cosmetic dentists offer a range of services that will help to:

  • Brighten your smile
  • Correct the shape, size, colour, contours and alignment of your teeth
  • Hide dental flaws like chips and cracks
  • Repair fractures and broken teeth

Restorative Dentistry

This branch of dentistry generally refers to any form of dental treatments that restores health and beauty to damaged teeth or replaces missing ones. Restorative dentistry fixes many types of dental problems, including: Discolouration; chips and cracks; severe decays and deep cavities; knocked out teeth; tooth loss caused by periodontal disease, etc.

Technological advancement has made it possible for restorative treatments to cure and rectify problems with quality materials and highly precise techniques. Utilising modern restorative materials like composite resins and porcelain, today’s restorations – including crowns, bridges, dentures and tooth coloured fillings – are stronger and more natural looking.

Restorative processes can be further classified into direct and indirect restorations. Direct restorative dentistry places the restoration on the tooth itself, while the indirect method involves fabricating the restoration outside the patient’s mouth, usually at a dental lab. The former process involves materials like composite resins, dental amalgam and glass ionomer cements. The indirect method uses materials like porcelain, gold and zirconia.

Preventative Dentistry

These are treatments that enhance your oral health with a long-term perspective. We do this by helping you to maintain healthy teeth and gums using pre-emptive measures and diagnostic techniques.

Prolonged dental treatments can be very expensive and time consuming. Preventative dentistry is designed to care for your dental issues today so that you do not have to face dental illnesses in the future. Our strategy includes devising at-home oral hygiene routines, coupled with regular dental visits, to stay on top of your dental health progress. Cutting edge diagnostic instruments like digital X-rays clearly show hidden cavities and other underlying problem areas, so that we remain vigilant for any unusual developments.

Of course, we also need to pre-empt the occurrence of any unforeseen dental issues like injury or sudden onset of pain. That’s why we offer an emergency service to offer relief at the first sight of pain.
