Preventative Dentistry

Retain your natural teeth for life with preventative dentistry!

Preventative dentistry can be described as a bedrock of good oral health. Encompassing the practice of good oral hygiene habits, preventative dentistry should begin early and last throughout a person’s life.

At Monterey Keys Dental Surgery, we stress the importance of both home and professional dental care as being complementary components of preventative dentistry. One simply cannot work without the other. That is why we believe in an active oral maintenance program that combines the routine “brushing, flossing and rinsing” regime with twice-yearly professional check-ups and cleaning sessions.

We will tailor each active maintenance program to meet your specific needs. Since every individual is unique and has a different set of dental needs, a “one-size-fits-all” process simply does not work. As healthcare professionals, we understand the need to take a “big picture approach” whether in terms of diagnosis, evaluation or treatment. Our preventative programs are geared towards identifying dental problems in their earliest stages so that we can employ treatments that are as minimally invasive as possible.

By maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine from a young age, you can actively prevent tooth loss and oral health complications later in life. At Monterey Keys Dental Surgery, our team of highly experienced dental professionals can diagnose any oral issues in their early stages, and take preventative action to reduce the chance of lengthy dental treatment down the track.

It is never too late to invest in your oral health, so please visit our practice for an oral health check every six months. To schedule a regular check-up with one of our friendly dentists, call Monterey Keys Dental Surgery at (07) 5665 8144 today!

Understand the importance of preventative dentistry: Start visiting your dentist regularly

Although regular brushing and flossing are pivotal to your oral hygiene, they are unfortunately not enough to keep your oral health in check. Periodic oral examinations and prophylactic cleaning sessions by a qualified dental professional are an indispensible facet of your dental health program.

The role of a preventative dentist generally involves:

  • Minimising the occurrence of dental problems;
  • Detecting early warning signs;
  • Treating issues while they are still minor using minimally invasive techniques; and
  • Cleaning teeth and gums thoroughly to keep teeth and gums healthy.

In addition to these foundational goals, here are more specific reasons for preventative dentistry – and why you need to see your dentist regularly for check-and-clean sessions:

Gum disease control

According to 2014 Australian statistics, 26.8 per cent of men and 19 per cent of women suffer from gum disease.1 The same report found that the disease affects 53.4 per cent of seniors (aged 65 and over).1

Gum disease refers to the inflammation of the gingiva or soft tissue surrounding the teeth. The oral bacteria in our mouth, along with saliva and food particles, form a sticky substance known as plaque, which is responsible for causing gum disease. When plaque is allowed to harden and becomes tartar, it cannot be removed by normal tooth brushing. Only a dentist or dental hygienist can remove tartar to prevent the development of gum disease.

The inflammation caused by the bacteria is known as ‘gingivitis’, or the early stage of gum disease. Untreated gingivitis can develop into periodontitis – an advanced stage of inflammation – that occurs when the plaque grows and spreads below the gum line. The infection can cause the bone and connective tissue that hold your teeth in place to break down, leading to eventual tooth loss or a badly damaged tooth that needs to be extracted.

The importance of early detection and treatment of gum disease symptoms cannot be over-emphasized. Regular checks at a dentist’s office will significantly reduce the risk of gum disease, and more importantly, prevent it from developing beyond the early stages. If detected early, gum disease can still be treated with minimally invasive methods. Delaying treatment can lead to major dental problems down the road, resulting in the need for complex dental procedures and even surgery.

Professional cleaning

Dental cleaning or prophylaxis remains the only effective means of removing plaque and tartar deposits. Using specialised tool, the dentist or dental hygienist can remove the decay-causing substances that have accumulated on your teeth’s surface and in the crevices between your teeth and gum tissues. Prophylaxis cleans the hard-to-reach areas of your teeth and polishes your teeth so that the surface becomes so smooth and clean that bacteria cannot easily stick to them.
