Wisdom Teeth Removal Gold Coast

wisdom teeth removal gold coastIt is estimated that over 80% of wisdom teeth need to be removed.

Are you suffering from pain caused by a wisdom tooth? Have you been putting up with the pain to avoid seeing a dentist? Since the wisdom tooth does not serve any practical functions yet is known to cause dental ailments and severe pain if left alone, the best option available to you is to remove it.

Do you know that the older you get, the more difficult it is to remove your wisdom tooth?

Some people may successfully avoid the effects of wisdom teeth in the early part of their adult life, until the pain erupts when they reach their 40s or beyond. The bad news is, the older one gets, the more difficult it becomes to carry out a successful wisdom tooth extraction. When the bone surrounding the tooth becomes denser with age, and the roots deepened, the removal procedure actually becomes more complicated and post-surgery healing also takes a longer time. At the late stage, however, you may be left with little option other than assuming the operative risks.

Monterey Keys Dental Surgery: For Safe and Effective Removal of your Wisdom Teeth

There are no benefits to delaying a wisdom tooth removal but leaving it alone may have dire consequences. If you’re experiencing dental pain or suspect a problem with your wisdom tooth, contact Monterey Keys Dental Surgery for a proper evaluation and consultation at (07) 5665 8144.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are our third molars, and generally erupt in our late teens to early twenties. You may have as few as one, as many as four, or none at all. Problems arise in relation to wisdom teeth when they become impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth occur when the teeth develop at an angle and do not emerge in the correct position.

What happens when a wisdom tooth is impacted?

An impacted tooth is a partially emerged wisdom tooth. When a wisdom tooth fails to erupt fully, emerges out of proper alignment or gets trapped beneath the gums and bones, it can result in short to long-term health concerns. For the most immediate, it may cause extreme pain and discomfort.

Symptoms of an impacted wisdom tooth

Not all impacted wisdom teeth will cause pain. If you do feel pain, it is because the errant tooth is upsetting the balance of your normal teeth and gum development, leading to infections and other ailments. These in turn will manifest in pain – and it can be anything from mild to excruciating.

However, severity of pain is not the barometer for assessing whether it is related to your wisdom tooth. It is therefore important to visit our Gold Coast dental surgery for regular check-ups, especially if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • Pain in the jawbone
  • Redness or swelling of the gums around the tooth
  • Bad breath
  • Stiffness of the jaw or difficult opening the mouth
  • Headache
  • Swollen lymph nodes under the jaw area
  • Infection

Who needs their wisdom tooth removed and why?

If you experience any of the symptoms above, you may be a candidate for wisdom teeth removal. It is highly recommended that wisdom teeth detected in people while in their twenties or late teens be removed as soon as possible.

While the mention of surgery or extraction may scare off some people, the alternatives could be far worse. The consequences of avoiding surgery now is likely a far more painful experience, not to mention riskier procedure if carried out in your late 30s or 40s.

If you’re not sure if wisdom teeth removal will benefit you, please contact us at (07) 5665 8144 to arrange for a proper evaluation and consultation.

Why remove wisdom teeth?

Most modern jaws do not have room to accommodate these new teeth, and so this factor can lead to a range of problems:

  • Wisdom teeth may not be able to break through your gums
  • Gum tissue may grow over the partially erupted tooth- trapping food and bacteria causing infection.
  • This infection may lead to a cyst or bone damage.
  • Wisdom teeth are more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease as they are harder to clean.

At our Gold Coast dental surgery we have a range of sedation options to ensure that your wisdom teeth extraction is as comfortable as possible.

Wisdom Teeth Removal - Post Extraction Care Instructions

Our goal is for your healing process after an extraction to be as comfortable as possible. The removal of teeth is a surgical procedure, and post-operative care is imperative. Please click here to download instructions.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Please observe the following post-operative dos and don’ts carefully. They will help make your recovery period as pleasant and pain-free an experience as possible.

What to do:

  • You will need plenty of rest within the first 24 hours of the operation, during which time you should avoid strenuous exercise.
  • Drink lots of fluid as it helps with the healing.

What not to do:

  • Do not rinse your mouth during the first 24 hours after the surgery or you may risk disrupting the blood clot formation.
  • Do not resume regular diet immediately but do it gradually over a few days – beginning with a soft diet with foods like ice cream, mashed potatoes and pudding.
  • Do not smoke for at least 3 days after the operation. Pre- and post-operative smoking may increase infection risk.

If you should encounter any post-operative problems or difficulties, give us a call at (07) 5665 8144. As your treatment provider, we are in the best position to look after your needs – even after the surgery.
