Lots of patients want a whiter smile, whether they’re dissatisfied with the current colour of their teeth or simply wanting to enhance their appearance for a special occasion. At Monterey Keys, we help patients understand the options that are right for them and get a fresher-looking smile in a short period of time!

At our dental surgery based on the Gold Coast, we provide a range of in surgery and at-home whitening options to help refresh your smile. Keep reading to find out more about this popular cosmetic dentistry option.

What is teeth whitening?

The natural colour of teeth varies between shades of white and a light grey-yellow, but over time food and beverages can change its appearance, causing stains and discolouration. Teeth whitening is one dental solution that can help to restore the appearance of teeth, with this treatment being one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures.

Professional bleaching is a common method that involves a bleaching formula being applied to the stained teeth and a special light being used to begin the whitening action. The active ingredient of the bleaching formula is then broken down with oxygen getting into the enamel, resulting in teeth becoming lighter.

Dental patients may also be offered the choice of taking home a tailor-made whitening kit prepared by our team. An impression of your teeth is taken and then a custom-moulded tray is prepared. Our dentist will then proceed to create a solution to match the whitening level required, where you will then be guided on how to use the kit.

Depending on your circumstances and goals, you may benefit from a combination of both of these methods.

What causes discolouration?

Discoloured teeth can affect your entire smile and appearance. Discolouration may result from a variety of factors, including:

  • Consumption of coffee, tea or red wine
  • Smoking
  • Regularly eating highly coloured foods (such as darkly coloured berries or foods with dark dyes)
  • Part of the ageing process (stains tend to accumulate as we get older)
  • Certain medications
  • Dental hygiene
  • Tooth decay
  • Genetics
  • Factors that occurred as the patient’s teeth were developing (for example, the use of certain types of antibiotics)

Exactly as it sounds, this procedure is meant to help whiten the colour of your teeth. This can refresh your entire appearance with one simple, non-invasive treatment.

It’s often ideal to first understand what is causing your discolouration before beginning whitening treatment; if you eliminate certain factors like tooth decay or medication use, then you and your dentist will have a better idea of what will work for you (or, whether you may need other treatments first so as not to impede the benefits of your whitening procedure).

Advantages and disadvantages of Zoom! Whitening

With all whitening treatments, there are many advantages and disadvantages. The biggest advantage of any type of whitening treatment is the result of a whiter and brighter smile. However, a common disadvantage of teeth whitening is that you may experience tooth sensitivity following treatment. This is normal the majority of cases, but if the sensitivity persists, contact us.

If you’re thinking about whitening your teeth, Zoom! In Chair Teeth Whitening is an excellent option. It is a quick and safe option with the treatment typically taking only an hour and a half to complete. The treatment is completed using a gentle laser to accelerate whitening results.

Why should I see a dentist for my whitening treatment?

There are lots of different avenues for your teeth whitening treatment, including over-the-counter options and even kiosks in shopping centres and malls. So why should you see have your treatment administered professionally?

The ADA has recommended that you at least consult a professional before seeking any whitening procedure. The ADA advises against receiving treatment from anyone who is not a registered dental professional.

This is because, while teeth whitening is a tested and verifiably safe option when properly administered by a professional, bleaching can result in a number of negative side effects if done incorrectly. Seeking treatment from a non-professional can increase your odds of experiencing side effects like:

  • Poor results
  • Damage to your enamel
  • Uneven colouring (especially if you have any crowns or veneers, which do not whiten the same as a natural tooth)
  • Chemical burns on your gums
  • Blistering
  • Heightened sensitivity
  • Damage or irritation to your stomach and oesophagus if you consume too much of the bleaching agent used in the whitening process

Moreover, even if you do not choose to receive whitening treatment from Monterey Keys Dental Surgery, we strongly advise you to consult with our team before undergoing any over-the-counter or third-party whitening procedures. If your discolouration is caused by an underlying dental problem such as tooth decay, then whitening may be ineffectual or even counterproductive.

Our professionals can also help you understand if your discolouration is the result of uncontrollable factors like genetics, and advise you on options that may be more effective. You should discuss any whitening treatments you’re considering so that we can help you make the safest and most informed decision.

We also recommend receiving a professional clean beforehand, as this can help facilitate your treatment and help us find any potential problems.

How long do the effects of whitening treatment last?

There’s no single answer for every patient; your effects will depend on lifestyle factors, age, genetics and other variables. However, on average, effects of treatment should last about a year.

Speak with your Gold Coast dentist to understand your circumstances and how much time you may have before needing a top-up. There are also a number of ways that you can help increase the longevity of your whitening procedure, such as:

  • Do not smoke
  • Try to abstain from beverages like wine, coffee or tea
  • Try to avoid anything with darker colours or dyes, like blueberries or heavily-dyed goods
  • Visit your dentist for regular cleans
  • Maintain an oral hygiene routine
